What is Permalip?
Permalip is a permanent alternative to lip injections for augmentation. It is a soft, customizable implant that is placed carefully in the lips to give natural, permanent enhancement.
Who is a candidate?
Patients who desire lip augmentation who have not had great results with fillers, or who desire a more permanent solution. Certain patients will not do well with this implant including patients with extremely thin lips, significant asymmetry, or presence of scarring.
What does the procedure involve?
The procedure starts with careful measurement and determination of the best implant for you. This includes the thickness and width. The lip implants are placed in the office under local anesthesia (and possibly light oral sedation). Similar to a dental procedure, topical anesthesia will be placed under the lip for several minutes, and then lidocaine is injected to anesthetize the lip. At this point, a small incision is made at each oral commissure and a very precise tunnel is developed for the implant. The implants are then placed in this precise pocket, and the incisions closed. The procedure will take about 1 hour.
What is the recovery like?
As with most lip procedures, there will be some swelling, most significant over the first 48 hours and then resolving over the next few days. Discomfort is usually mild, and controlled with oral analgesics. The sutures will come out in 4-5 days. There is no significant wound care.
What are the risks?
Complications are uncommon, but as with any procedure, can happen. Most common issues are infection, swelling, and some temporary numbness. Migration of the implant is rare.
What if I don’t like the implant?
The implants can be easily removed. They are made from a material that is both smooth and natural, but also have the ability to be removed without significant trauma or scarring.
